The mimosas of the valley of la Gaillarde

Dès la fin du mois de janvier, le littoral des Maures s'illumine de jaune. C'est un signe annonciateur du printemps. Toutes les facettes de cet arbre seront abordées au cours de la balade : qui est-il vraiment ? d'où vient-il ? pourquoi est-il si présente chez nous ? pourquoi est-il qualifié de "peste" ?.

TAKE A WALK : (Length: from 1 ½ to 2 hours)

1. Starting out from the Tourist Office, cross Parc Jean Moulin and turn left on to Avenue Gabriel Péri to join up with Rue du Pré de Foire on your left. Follow the Rue des Dalles opposite the "Coifferie". You are now on the edge of the historic village. Take Rue Grande and climb up to the Town Hall (Hôtel de Ville).
   
2. Opposite you, you will see the "Fontaine Neuve" fountain and statue; the waters of the Siagnole river run in the basin. On your left is the old washtub. Take Impasse Barbacane to return to Rue de la Glacière. The outer face of the "Portalet" marked the edge of the "castrum" or ancient castle. Of note is the rectangular stone decorated with a salamander (the emblem of Francis I) and two interlaced oak leaves - the coat of arms of Monseigneur de Larovère, Bishop of Fréjus. Go through the triple vault to the parish church than on to Place de l’Abbé Deschamps on your right, with its circular view of the north face of the church and the "castrum".
   
3. After this short tour, head back to Rue Saint-Michel to the right of the Church. At N°1, you will see the consular building and façade of the "Tour de l'Horloge" (Clock Tower). Further on, is the Portal Saint-Michel (11th century). Go underneath and to the end of Rue Saint-Michel. At the bottom of the stairway is another very picturesque view (the "castrum" ancient castle, ramparts and famous "Rocher de Roquebrune" or Roquebrune Rock).
   
4. At Place Perrin, take a look at the Pharmacy's "Marquise" or iron canopy - now a listed monument. Head right, then go along Rue de l'Hospice - the site of the former "Hôtel Dieu" or hospital (1545). Erected in 1781, the chapel is now the home of the "Musée du Patrimoine" folk museum. N° 15 was the former site of an oil mill. Cross the square again to the Rue des Portiques (16th century). At N° 27, you will see an intricately-worked door - undoubtedly the village's finest. Opposite the porticoes is the "Fontaine Vieille" architectural ensemble with its majestic stairway rising up to the clock tower (vaulted passage, bell tower and bell).
   
5. At Rue de l'Hôtel de Ville, pass under the porticoes and go down Rue de la Fromagerie. Turn left at the end and go back up Rue Saint-Esprit towards the "Portal" (two 18th century forged iron balconies decorate this "covered alleyway"). You will then come to the narrow and winding Ruelle du Moulin, leading to Place Saint-Pierre. Opposite is the Rue du Pré de Foire leading back to the Tourist Office. On your left, is one of the Var region's oldest fig trees (120 years), plus an ancient magnolia a little further on, on your right.
