The village of Cogolin is set at the foot of the Maures hills in a protected area. It has kept an authentic aspect with its old paved streets, flowering squares, remains of an old castle, a clock tower with a drawbridge and old fortifications.
But it is to its craftsmanship that Cogolin owes its international reputation : carpet manufacture, pipe manufacture and reeds for wind instruments manufacture. Legend tells that aboard the boat carrying the body of the Christian martyr Torpes from Italy, which ran aground on the shores of today's Saint-Tropez , were a rooster ("coq" in French) and a dog. At the time, the bay was filled with dirty, briny water, infested with mosquitoes and reeds. The rooster flew away into a neighbouring linseed ("lin" in French) field...
... and the name Cogolin (Coq Au Lin!) , was born. No-one knows exactly what happened to the dog though ! The history of Cogolin has been largely influenced by Counts of Provence and the Religious Wars, then the latter-day Allied Landings. . The carpet manufacture : this manufacture has made carpets since the 1920's on Jacquard and oriental looms for clients worldwide such as the "Elysée", the White House, the "Grand Trianon". The weavers work to the sound of the clicking of the hooks and cylinders for the highest quality carpets made by hand only according to tradition.
. The pipe manufacture : One of the oldest manufactures in the world to make pipes! For over a hundred years this family business has made its reputation with the quality of its pipes. The pipes are made out of local briar from the Maures hills and exist in all shapes and sizes.
. Reeds for wind instruments : Manufactured from local reeds by the firm "Rigotti", they are then exported all over the world, from Japan to the West Coast of the United States. The greatest international musicians order them by the boxful.
. Sailing : Windsurfing, sail boats and catamaran, courses or private lessons at the sailing school at Les Marines de Cogolin, 5 km from the village on the RN 98 road towards Saint-Tropez.
. Antique dealers : village and activity park over 7000 m2 for the pleasure of treasure hunting. . In the evening : Port Cogolin (residential quarter built around a marina) comes alive with its restaurants and piano bars.
