Le Rayol Canadel is situated at the west end of the Maures hills on the coast. More than a village it is a vast garden with its rich and varied plant life (covering 80 % of the commune) : over 400 species from all around the world.
The Domaine du Rayol, (click here) is worth the visit and offers a fascinating insight into this stretch of the Maures coast at the turn of the 20th century, when the rich built their fabulous houses and vast gardens. The rocky coast line is a succession of capes, coves and bays with 4 sandy beaches which do not get too crowded. Up to the turn of the century, the coastal areas of the Maures Hill were practically uninhabited, mainly due to their remoteness. However, when the Provençal railway network was set up in 1885, the coast became accessible and the area's current touristic vocation was born. The seaside resort of Rayol, covering around 750 acres, was created when "La Mole" was extended in 1925 by the "Compagnie d'Entreprise Immobilière ou Terre de France".
It includes five quarters : Rayol, Canadel, Le Fenouillet, Le Dattier and Les Pierrugues. Major planning work was undertaken, with 35 km of roads, stairways, gardens, hotels and tennis courts, as well as the "Pergola du Patek", the jetty and an imitation Provençal village - plus a small marina. The Provencal Landing took place at midnight on August 14-15th, 1944 on Canadel beach. Major ceremonies are organized every year to commerorate this historic event. Initially forming part of La Mole, Le Rayol-Canadel became independent in 1949. . The " Domaine du Rayol" : Magnificent Mediterranean garden, standing witness to the village's sumptuous past, the "Domaine" offers a fascinating insight into this stretch of the Maures coast at the turn of the 20th century, when the rich built their fabulous houses and vast gardens here... click here
